Four arrested on drug charges in IllinoisWhite County, Illinois and Southern Illinois Drug Task Force agents fanned out across White County, Illinois early this morning in a special drug and warrant detail.
White County, Illinois Sheriff Doug Maier said it was a successful detail, as four people were arrested on methamphetamine-related charges and outstanding warrants.
Maier, Sheriff Sgts. Craig Poole and Byrd Huber, Deputy Sheriff Randy Graves and four unnamed SIDTF agents began the detail around 3 a.m. in the Springerton, Burnt Prairie and Enfield areas.
As Illinois officers staked out a rural road, a vehicle passed the stake-out site and Poole observed a vehicle being driven by Michael S. McDonald, 38, whose residence was listed as a South Church Street (Carmi) address. Officers also noted the passenger was Barry D. Flowers, 38, Springerton.
Knowing Flowers was wanted on a felony warrant, the vehicle was stopped by authorities. Graves quickly arrived at the scene after Poole stopped the vehicle for a broken windshield.
Officers noticed a hose in the back of the vehicle. The hose had a metal fitting attached to it and the fitting was blue-green, the report said. The officers recognized that as an indicator that anhydrous ammonia had been present in the fittings.
Flowers was placed under arrest at that time on the outstanding warrant.
McDonald was asked about the vehicle stopping on the rural road earlier and about the hose and fitting. He said he did not know anything about the fitting and there was nothing illegal in the car. He allowed the officers to open the trunk, where a chemical odor was noted. McDonald was told he was free to leave and warned the investigation might continue.
After transporting Flowers to the City-County Jail in Carmi, officers returned to the area and discovered that a meth lab had been disposed of beside the road. Officers concurred that no other vehicle had been on the road and that the lab came from the McDonald vehicle.
The lab contained a clear bottle of ephedrine, one container of Liquid Fire, a can of starting fluid, a plastic bottle with salt, coffee filters, a bottle of Coleman fuel, a glass jar with lithium strips, plastic tubing and one green cylinder containing anhydrous ammonia. The drug task force handled the clean-up of the site.
Sheriff's deputies then began the search for McDonald, who was stopped again shortly after 4 a.m. McDonald was placed under arrest at that time for methamphetamine production, transportation of anhydrous ammonia and having no valid insurance. McDonald was also ticketed for an obstructed/broken windshield. The vehicle was towed from the scene by S & E Salvage. McDonald was then transported to the City-County Jail.
Flowers was also charged with meth production, transportation of anhydrous and two White County, Illinois felony warrants. One is for deceptive practice, the other for criminal damage to property.
Law enforcement agents arrested two Burnt Prairie residents later in the morning as part of the same detail.
Graves and other officers were serving a Wayne County, Illinois arrest warrant in Burnt Prairie, Illinois that led to the double arrest. After executing a search warrant at 317 Church St., officers arrested John S. Whetstone, 21, of that address on the warrant and also for possession of a controlled substance and possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis. The drugs were discovered during the search, according to Maier.
Also arrested at the residence for possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis was Ricky Jason West, 22, 567 Church St., Burnt Prairie.
Maier said at mid-morning all four of the suspects remained in jail, awaiting a court appearance. At mid-morning, bond had not been set on any of the suspects.
